A Guide on Buying and Installing a Split Air Conditioner

Posted by Amy Jones on

There are many benefits of getting a split air conditioner for your Perth home. For one, this type of air conditioning unit cools more effectively and operates more quietly. It also helps reduce the risk of triggering allergies by purifying the air.

If you don’t have one yet, perhaps it’s time to think about split system air conditioner installation. Perth residents will particularly enjoy this type of air conditioning to help temper the region’s humid climate. Before you head off to get one, however, check out the following tips for buying and installing a split air conditioner:

Tips on Buying a Split Air Conditioner

There are several factors to consider when buying a split air conditioner. However, the main things you should focus on are the cooling/heating capacity and energy efficiency. For the cooling/heating capacity, it’s best if you get a unit with at least two speeds so you can adjust not just the temperature but also the strength of air flow. Ideally, for a 30-square-metre room, you will need at least 3.5 to 5.0 KW for cooling and about 3.7 to 6.0 KW for heating. When in doubt, ask the installers what size is the best for your space.

In terms of energy efficiency, check the energy efficiency ratio or EER of the air conditioner. The higher the number, the less power the unit consumes to do its job. Alternatively, you should check the energy star rating of the unit. Five stars is the highest, so aim to find one with this rating to make sure your electricity bills don’t skyrocket.

Other factors you need to consider include the price, air quality and filtration features, as well as ease of maintenance.

Split Air Conditioner Installation Guide

When it comes to the installation of a split system air conditioner, it’s best to leave it to the hands of professionals. This is especially true if you don’t have any prior experience and the right tools.

The first step is a home evaluation. Your preferred air conditioner installers will check vent locations, load-bearing walls, supports, ceiling space, and air ducts. They’ll also check the amount of heat and natural light that the room receives since these will affect the cooling capacity of the air conditioner. These inspections will help determine the right position to install the unit.

After the evaluation, the installer will then proceed to attach the mounting brackets for the indoor unit and carve a hole in the wall. This hole is where the electrical wiring, drainage lines, and tubing will pass through, connecting the indoor to the outdoor condenser. After this, all the necessary wiring and tubing will be put through the hole. The indoor unit is also installed at this point.

Outside, the condenser will either be secured on the ground. If the room to be cooled is on the second floor, it will be mounted using brackets or any other sturdy support mechanism. All that’s left after this step is to connect the indoor to the outdoor unit.

The steps sound simple, but they require electrical and mechanical experience. If done incorrectly, your split air conditioner will not work or, worse, get broken. As mentioned, it’s best to leave this to the experts to ensure the best result.

There you have it! Hopefully, this simple guide has helped your decision-making in buying and installing a split air conditioner.
