Split System Maintenance and Installation

Posted by Bodie Czeladka on

Air conditioning is essential for most Aussie families during the summer months. A reliable and efficient air conditioner makes life much more comfortable when the temperatures begin to climb. However, like all appliances, air conditioners won’t last forever. You may begin to notice some common problems as your unit ages which need attention before turning into costly repairs.

A well-maintained air conditioner will perform more efficiently for longer compared to a neglected unit. However, after a while all air con units may run into some problems, including split systems. Some problems simply may indicate a need for maintenance or repair; and more serious issues might result in a new split system installation.

Decreased or No Air Flow

If you experience a decrease in air flow during operation, it’s a good idea to check your filters first. If the filters are clogged this can affect the air flow, and can simply be cleaned. However, if there is a significant decrease in air flow it may indicate that there is a problem with the compressor.

Temperature is Inconsistent to Settings

One common problem with air conditioners when they get older is that they don’t cool or heat they way they should. If your unit completely stops providing cold air it may be low on refrigerant. However, if your air conditioner produces warm air on the cool setting, this may suggest a more serious problem.

You might also experience inconsistent temperatures. This may indicate a need to check the filters, valves and coils for any obstructions. A qualified technician will be able to complete any checks or repairs safely for you.

Strange Smells

A foul smell coming from your split system should be addressed immediately. This could be mould or mildew growing inside the unit. It may also mean that the filters need to be cleaned which is relatively simple. However, if there is visible mould inside the air conditioner, it is best to get a qualified technician to address the situation. Strange smells shouldn’t be ignored. Dirt, mould and mildew can contaminate the air which is then circulated throughout your home.

Unusual Sounds

You will probably be familiar with the sounds your split system makes during operation, so any unusual sounds could mean there is an issue with the unit. Depending on the sound there may be a part lose, or maybe the fan isn’t working as it should. But if the noise is quite loud it might suggest that there is a more serious issue which needs to be checked by a qualified technician.

A Noticeable Increase in Energy Use

If you have noticed a dramatic increase in your energy bills that wasn’t caused by another appliance, it might mean that your split system is struggling. There may be a problem with your air conditioner causing it to run inefficiently. If it’s an old system it may require a new split ac installation. However, a qualified technician will be able to determine the problem and what needs to be done.
